The Metal Mashup: August Vol.2 – 2018

Aug 2018: Grind it wet, wear sleeves, Barbie-inspired women are fillin’ the gap, a Get ‘er Done welder, and a lil’ tool porn.

GRIND IT WET

The Neutra Wet Tungsten Grinder & replacement grinding wheels are hot tickets.

GREAT TOOLS DON’T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE

There’s no shortage of great tools made by our friends at Strong Hand Tools, and we’re always pleased to share some of our favorites to get you out of a bind, hold your work piece & grinder, or set things up just right. It’s not just about having a tricked-out shop… you gotta have #toolsthatmakeyoumoney

WHEN IT’S HOT, I GOTTA WEAR SLEEVES

Why wear anything else? No matter what the weather brings, we’ve got a job to do. Depending on the task at hand, you can still stay safe with minimal PPE. Sport a fashionable pair of sleeves to beat the heat and get ‘er done. We’ve got numerous options to choose from. Order yours today!

NO STRANGER TO HARD WORK

We love people who never give up and are always re-inventing themselves. We had the pleasure of getting to know Barbie Parsons, aka Barbie the Welder, a lil’ better in a recent interview for our Carmen Electrode blog. We’re excited to share more of her story with our readers. Take a few minutes and prepare to be inspired!

MORE WOMEN FILLING THE GAP

In order to attract more women, welding training programs have learned that they need to change. There’s a shortage of skilled trades people, so we’ve gotta do things differently… if we want different results. The ratio of male to female welders hasn’t changed significantly in the last decade. But an increasing # of dedicated women and men are working to change that. It’s always nice to learn in an environment that’s catered more toward you and your needs… new programs, developed to bolster the number of women in the trades, are offering women-only classes or adding courses targeted to women… and it seems that they’re increasingly successful at turning out skilled welders… Look around you, do you agree? #WELDLIKEAPRO

When you’re an entrepreneur who gets others out of a jam on a daily (and hourly) basis, you’ve gotta be a good juggler of hot iron… 24 hours a day. Nick Albright (@lnweldingllc) is a humble, talented, history buff, who also happens to be a successful, get ‘er done welder with 25 years of experience. His story makes us think of that video of Amazin’ Blaze who can “weld right-handed, left-handed, 6 inches off the floor, up against the wall, in the corner, with or without a mirror… uphill, downhill, side to side, no crack too tight, no gap too wide.” Nick’s favorite project is his next one because he loves to problem-solve and think outside the box. He does have a soft spot for big, nasty, greasy crushers and iron though. We were struck by his appreciation for his welding community, his girl – Audrey (a fat, gassy beagle mix), and most importantly his wife, Liz (the “L” in L&N Welding). Here’s to “Burning and Earning in the Hoosier State.”
