Specifications:
Pure tungsten in commonly used for TIG welding aluminum.  The material has a high "work-function" which makes it difficult to start and maintain a stable arc.  Pure tungsten has a high burn-off rate which results in short tip life when ground to a point.

Pure tungsten makes it easy to get a nice shiny ball on the tip of the tungsten by reversing the welding machine's polarity and zapping it on a grounded plate.  Balled tungsten is widely used by "old school" TIG welders for welding aluminum.  Pure tungsten was the first tungsten used when Russell Meredith invented the HeliArc welding process in 1941 at Northrup Aircraft in Southern California.  In the years to follow, engineers at Linde Division of The Union Carbide Corporation discovered that they could get better tungsten tip life by adding or doping tungsten with Thorium and other materials.
